Anthony Davis Blew Out the Pistons

Basketball is a team sport, and the Pelicans won today. But, the top story from today’s game was Anthony Davis.  His historic stat line of 59 points (24-34) and 20 rebounds has only been matched a handful of times. It is hard to overstate how impressive he was. He scored from every level and 6 of his 20 rebounds came on the offensive end.

Of course, there was more to this game than AD. Jrue came close to a triple double, despite my prediction that he would have an off game. Asik played pretty well, and then he got injured. Ryan Anderson was pretty cold throughout. There were some other points worth mentioning, but we will get to that later.

One of my main takeaways from this game is a bummer. See, the Pistons are an alright team, and after all of AD’s individual efforts, the Pelicans only won by 5. I don’t want to be a wet blanket, because today was a great day for Pelicans fans. But, there is a lot of excitement right now. That’s great, but today shouldn’t force us to recalibrate too much. This is still a beat up and injured team. The playoffs aren’t really anymore in reach than they were before, but we did learn something today. As long as AD is playing, this team is worth watching.

Here are some other observations.

  • Bryce Dejean-Jones – I really like this guy. He’s not great or amazing, but he makes smart decisions more often than not and doesn’t do too much. Frankly, I’d like to see him continue to get minutes after Gordon gets healthy.
  • Asik – Complaining about Asik has become a meme at this point. If he plays, we complain about him not playing well. If he doesn’t play, we complain about how much he gets paid to not play. If he plays and plays well, we still find something to complain about. He only played 7 minutes today, and he was good for those 7 minutes. Of course, I still saw some complaints on twitter.
  • Jrue Holiday – He was awesome today. There isn’t much else to say about that.
  • Norris Cole – He confounds me. I really don’t see the appeal of Cole beyond reputation at this point.
  • Ryan Anderson – He was so cold today. Our offense can’t really stand that with Tyreke and Gordon out. He has to be a threat… or AD has to go 24-34. Both options work for me.

That’s all for this one folks. Sorry it took me a bit to put the recap up. The Pelicans next game is on Tuesday against the Wizards. We will see you then.

One response to “Anthony Davis Blew Out the Pistons”

  1. That was a fun game.  On the wire the whole way,  AD was AMAZING and we WON! I only see this as positive. It’s true that we ‘only’ beat an almost .500 team by 5, but we did that with no Eric Gordon, Pondexter or Tyreke.  Mostly without Asik who got injured early and pretty much without Ryan who couldn’t come close (except for that half court toss).   All positive.  Now, if we can either get everyone healthy & playing well or let AD score 59 a night we’ll be unstoppable – lol!
