Goodbye, Hornets247

Letting go of you was so hard to do
And I thought that it would kill me
But I made it through somehow
And I’m so much stronger now

— Warrant, Stronger Now (R.I.P. Jani Lane)

From the moment we knew the New Orleans Hornets would rebrand, we knew things would change for us here at Hornets247. It was pretty clear with the whole Hornets/Pelicans thing. Sure, we could go the Bullets Forever route, but that’s been done.

No, like with the Hornets, things must change here, and Hornets247 will no longer be name of this site in just a few days.

A few things about this.

First, we’re not going to announce the name. Or the time of the change. One day, you’ll use your bookmark or your search or whatever, and you’ll go to a new URL instead. All the old links, etc. will still work, but the URL will be rewritten. No biggie. The twitter will just change names, no issue, nothing to do on your part. We will tell you that the site is not Pelicans247, but that URL will work (it does now). Moreover, the name does not include Pelicans at all. Rather, the name focuses on New Orleans. Have some fun with some guesses in the meantime.

Second, we want to think everyone that made Hornets247 such a great site. First and last are, of course, the readers (pssst . . . that’s you!). A little something else goes out to those people who comment, since they add even more life to the site. Thousands of people from around the world read what’s going on each day here and have done so for a long time. It’s that dedication that keeps the site going, and it is for you that we are evolving into . . . oh, wait . . . evolving along with the franchise.

Third, this site is not just going to have a new name. We’re going to do our best to bring more and better content to you deserving fans . . . you’ve been through so much . . . . We hope to surprise you in a few ways this summer.

Lastly, let’s remember the good time we had here whether is wins or losses, Shinn or Benson, Lakers or Clippers, Paul or Davis. Remember Ron Hitley and Niall Doherty. Remember Ryan’s Survivor comparisons. Remember Queen Bee’s running commentary during the games. Remember the little parts of each day where total stranger who will likely never see each other know that so many people feel the way they do about an misfit franchise.

Remember all that and more, because one day, and you won’t know when, it’ll all be gone.

But not really.

I held you for a moment in my hands
The moment with you slipped away like sand through my fingers now
In front of me a choice I have to make
To carry on or simply fade away, I lose you either way

I’d like to say that it was easy, it was hard
To say goodbye, I thought that I would die

Letting go of you, was so hard to do
And I thought that it would kill me
But I made it through somehow
And I’m so much stronger now

I gave to you my love and my respect
But I could never make you love me back, I denied it so
I grew bitter watching you grow cold
My life became your prison, took it’s toll

I decided like a bird that’s trapped inside a gilded cage
It’s right to set it free, hurts to watch it fly away

Letting go of you, was so hard to do
And I thought that it would kill me
But I made it through somehow
And I’m so much stronger now, so much stronger now

Letting go of you, was so hard to do
And I thought that it would kill me
But I made it through somehow
And I’m so much stronger now
Oh I’m so much stronger now
Yes I’m so much stronger now

  1. RIP hornets247! Thanks for being part of my years, and for allowing me to be part of this Hornets environment, as well as getting to know some people from New Orleans. That’s one hell of an expirience for me, from down here Brazil! Won’t lie I’m heart and soul a Pelican, we’ve dicussed the Hornets vs Pelicans thing on so many occasions it makes no sense to go through that again, but I just can’t let go on this site! while the Hornets aren’t back, I’m 100% a Pelican!

Congrats on your efforts to bring the best of the former-Hornets-now-Pelicans to the fans, no matter where they are or what it takes!

To all of you guys, once again, thanks!

    • Wow! great to hear Rafa!!!! I hope there are no hard feelings between you and me or anyone else that just didnt want to lose any fans. Its gonna be one hell of a ride, and im glad to hear youll be a part of it! Pelican Nation!

    • I think by draft day, but some statements indicate that the NBA timeline may not support this, pointing to “late summer.”

    • Another solid guess. Owned.

See, this rebrand stuff is tough. I said this in an article for Slam:

“The name has to be good, but it cannot be so good that someone else has it and wants $50,000 for it. This is a real example. So you really have to break ground to get the URL with complimentary twitter, etc. to have a coherent, professional brand for the world to see.”

But, yes, In the NO was an idea . . . a $50,000 idea. So, can’t do it.

No name is perfect, but some chances have to be taken in such an enterprise. A $50,000 chance can’t be taken by us.

  2. Will we still be able to access posts from the old site, even journals (Oh, how I miss them)? I know you have to Google the journals to bring them up, but will they still be available to find?

    • Yep, those links will still be active.

Pretty sure Jason can give you a description of how to access them if you trouble getting to them after the site rebrand.

    • All will remain the same and the Hornets247 links will work.

We will jigger with the site to improve navigation and the like.

Also, you can send us articles and we can post them under your name, no problem. Send to articles.

      • Good to see that you guys have a pro maintaining your models. Too many rebranded sites think they have to lose their old content.

I know you guys already have the name picked out, but the guy who owns milk.com is willing to sell for 10 mil. Probably would be worth it. Nothing local about it, I know, but I couldn’t pass up a chance to make that known.
