The Hornets have waived C Chris Johnson to make room for Watkins.

The Hornets have just announced that they have signed center Darryl Watkins to a 10-day contract to help fill the void left by Chris Kaman’s season-ending tibia injury.

Watkins, a 27 year old 6’11” center out of Syracuse University, played in three preseason games for New Orleans last season. After being cut by the Hornets, he went abroad, playing Sagesse in the Lebanese Basketball league in 2010-11 and then signing with Engomis in Cyprus this season. Darryl was most known in college for his shot-blocking talent.

Potentially the most important fact about Watkins is that his college nickname was “Mookie” and should be called as much by every single Hornets fan.
