Chris Paul Traded To Clippers

Chris Paul will be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for Eric Gordon, Al- Farouq Aminu, Chris Kaman, and the Minnesota 2012 first round draft pick. The Hornets held the line and in the end they got what they wanted—both Gordon and the 2012 draft pick. Make no mistake about Eric Bledsoe not being included. This is an excellent deal for the Hornets. As for the Clippers, they get Chris Paul. It’s a win-win if there ever was one.

“We wanted to make sure that we got the best possible deal for a player of Chris’ caliber, and we feel great about the outcome,” Hornets Chairman and Governor Jac Sperling said. “We feel our future looks very bright and we look forward to continue to create an organization that New Orleans will be proud of. We want to thank Chris Paul, an extraordinary person who contributed so greatly to our basketball team and our community. We wish him the best of luck.”

“With this trade, we now have three additional players who were among the top eight draft picks in their respective drafts as well as our own first round pick and Minnesota’s first round pick,” said Hornets General Manager Dell Demps. “Aminu is a young talent with a bright future, Gordon is a big time scorer and one of the best two guards in the league and Kaman is a proven center and former All-Star. Combined with our other players, we will field a competitive team and our future looks great.”

Gordon (6-3, 220), was drafted with the 7th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Clippers, averaged career-highs of 22.3 points, 4.4 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 56 games last season (all starts).  He scored 30+ points eight times last season, put together a streak of 20 or more points in 12 consecutive games and had 36 20+ point games overall. The Indianapolis native holds career averages of 18.1 points, 3.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game over 196 games (181 starts). Gordon was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2009 and was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in January of his rookie season. He went to Indiana University for one season before declaring for the draft, where he averaged 20.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 32 games. Gordon played for Team USA in the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey helping team to a perfect 9-0 record en route to winning the gold medal averaging 8.6 points.

Kaman (7-0, 265), who was the 6TH overall of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Clippers, averaged 12.4 points and 7.0 rebounds in 32 games (15 starts) last season. He holds career averages of 11.8 points and 8.3 rebounds in 493 games (425 starts). Since the 2003-04 season, Kaman is one of 31 players with 4,000+ rebounds and is just one of six players who grabbed all of those rebounds with just one team – joining Dwight Howard (Orlando), Tim Duncan (San Antonio), Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas), Udonis Haslem (Miami) and Josh Smith (Atlanta). Kaman had his best season of his NBA career en route to being named an NBA All-Star for first time during the 2009-10 season, averaging a team-high 18.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists in 34.3 minutes. The Central Michigan University product participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as a member of the German National Team due to his great-    grandparents German heritage, averaging 10.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 19.8 minutes.

Aminu (6-9, 215), who was drafted 8th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2010 NBA Draft, averaged 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per game over 81 games (14 starts) last season for the Clippers. The 22-year old averaged 8.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in 22.1 minutes over his 14 starts last season with the team. The former Wake Forest standout averaged 15.8 points, 10.7 rebounds and accumulated 44 blocks in 31 games while shooting 44.7 percent from the field during his sophomore season for the Demon Deacons before declaring early for the NBA Draft. Aminu descends from a line of Nigerian kings.

  1. Finally!!! The Chris Paul drama is over. Now the Clippers will probably be my second favorite team. We got a great deal in our part with Gordon, and the Minn. 1st round pick, Kaman, and Aminu.

  2. Awesome news! We are making out like bandits with draft picks for a potentially even brighter future.

Tank this year and make the Hornet’s pick top 5.

  3. now its time to trade okafor to houston for another first rounder and talent.

and ariza to a contender to be their lebron/melo/wade stopper

  4. This deal is better than the Laker deal and that deal was even better than the deal the Nuggets got for Melo so we came out pretty high on this one! Couple things. Why wouldn’t the Clippers include Bledsoe? They now have CP3, Billups, Bledsoe at the 1? I mean unless they move him over or they’re hanging on to him until after Billups is gone but that seems like a wasted year for a developing talent. Who’s gonna be our starting C Kaman or Okafor. I’m hoping we can flip Oky-doke…that’d be sweet! Aminu is a combo 3/4…do you think we move him to the 4 or are Aminu and Q-Pon gonna fight out the back-up 3 spot? I also think and I don’t know if Ryan, Joe, Michael, Jason or anyone wanna research this but I think Chris Paul is the first player in HISTORY to request a trade to the Clippers.

    • Ummm amimu is definetely not a 4. We can possibly slide him DOWN to play the 2 either starting or backing up marco

    • ur mum, they also have mo will on the books at the 1, so I also find that strange. I’d like to see Aminu get backup minutes at both the 3 and 4, and pondexter at the 2 and 3 with beli. dno how monty will work it

  5. We can’t tank this year theres alot of free agency left also it’s the Wolves that have to tank so it can be a lottery pick it’s a conditional pick not an unconditional one.

    • The pick is unprotected. Plus we’re going to want our pick to be high as well so we can add 2 good players.

      • Yeah but I still would rather make the playoffs this year and come away with one great pick and one pretty good pick being that this years draft class will be PACKED with talent

      • Always play to win. Sure, tanking and getting a good chance at landing a great player in the draft can be considered winning in the long run but that’s too much to think about. My brain hurts.

      • No team chooses to tank either? These player all have big ego’s and want to get payed and that goes for the coaches as well, we’re not tanking

On the other side of the coin, don’t expect an ultra competitve team, the west is brutal as always and we certainly don’t have a team that could be considered experienced/talented. But has alot of potential though

But i love this trade don’t get me wrong 😉

  6. Sweet Jesus. At last, at least. Apparently the Hornets send back to the Clippers a couple of second round draft picks.

  7. C: Okafor-Kaman
    PF: ??? (Carl Landry)-???-????
    SF: Ariza-Aminu – Q-Pon
    SG: GORDON-Belleneli – Q-Pon
    PG: Jack-??

Looks like we are loaded on the wings. I was looking forward to Q-Pon getting minutes this year. I wonder how this thing plays out? No doubt we need another PG and to re-sign Carl Landry and another big + hopefully Jason Smith back. Can Bellinelli play some point? Man if we would have held on to Collison I’d be feelin a lot better about this! I wonder if Okafor and kaman can play together. Kaman has a decent post/pick n pop game and Okafor is athletic enough to guard most 4’s in the league. Should be interesting….

      • I like that line-up but we should target another or two taller players like Alexis Ajinca and Yi Jianlian. that would be awesome and did we get C.Landry yet? if not I hope so we need him!! by the way this maybe dumb, but do you guys think we should go get an amesty player like Gilbert Arenas, Baron Davis, or Mike Redd.

  8. that minnesota pick is 100% unconditional. May they lose every game this season. Maybe we can deal with Minnesota, they are always ready to make dumb trades

  9. This trade was awesome. Exactly what I was waiting for. Bledsoe would have made it a fleecing, but this is more fair. Now we just have to hope the Wolves suck. Either way, i dont think we can tank. We need to sell the guys we just got on staying with this team. Especially Gordon.

I think Jack, Gordon, Aminu/Qpon, Okafor/Landry, Kaman is a solid starting 5. That being said, if we could move Kaman to a team that needs him, I’d be in favor of that. He’s a good center and an expiring contract. We should try to use that, because he probably wont re-sign.

Sadly, the best destination for him is probably the Lakers, but they have nothing I want.

    • No worries, Gordon will be a RFA this summer. We have at least 2 years to convince him and adding 2 great players in this years draft would go a long way.

      • And this could be just me but I think Nola has a good effect on taking in these players from trades. Cause they’re feeling i guess unappreciated to some extent, like Lamar did after the trade blow up. Once they get here that seem to fall in love with the passion and pride of the city and it’s fans.

Guys like Trevor, Aaron Gray (after 1st year), Marco, Meka
They’ve all seemed to fall in love with the city. So im pretty confident as to our appeal to non-superstars

  10. I am elated to say the least that this saga has finally ended if the NBA approves this in the end which indeed seems to be the case. Gordon is an excellent addition to the roster if his injury issues aren’t much a concern. Kaman also a concern injury wise can still produce at a high level if given court time and can have Emeka move down to the 4 and Kaman be the 5. I have a feeling that we all will be big Aminu fans over the next few years where he really develops into a possible mega-star.

This is a trade we needed to make. Chris Paul is without a doubt one of the best Hornets of all time and will not be debated in the pantheon of Hornet greats like Mugsy, Dell, D. West and Rice.

    Now I just hope the T-Wolves go 10-56. 🙂

  11. It’s never win-win when you trade away a top 55 player. Wish we could have gotten Bledsoe more than Kaman. However this is about as good as it’s going to get.

    • Personally, this is the most excited I’ve been since 2008. Remember, we’ve been debating Paul leaving for a long time. Two first round picks, the 2 and 3 spot locked up, not to mention backup 1. Oak is still an above average starting center, and Kaman can either be flipped or the Hornets have a nice core bigman tandem. Plus draft picks. But I’m most excited that DellMonty get a clean slate and breathing space now that the Paul saga is over. I have high hopes that New Orleans has a really good coach/GM combo, and will be a relevant team on the court starting now. I’m not sure how I feel about all this tanking talk. I’d rather build a culture of winning. I know being mediocre in the NBA is worse than being bad, but I have optimism that the Hornets are on the way to being good, and I’d hate to start sowing bitterness and bad attitudes by tanking. YAAAYY!We can start talking real Hornets basketball again!

    • But Kaman is a very good asset too, wasn’t he almost flipped for Andre Iguodala around the draft date? So obviously he’s got some value on the market.

  12. I have never been this excited. This is an amazing trade for both teams. The Clippers are my second favorite team (I am from Los Angeles)

Hornets get an absolute potential super star in eric gordon and get the potential number 1 pick in a incredibly stacked draft class.,

Kaman’s expiring is big as well and i think Aminu can be a very solid player.

Amazin trade i am so happy

  13. Now offer Gordon an extension!! lol and then call up Carl Landry and another big! One of those d league pf we have is legit maybe can take the pf spot!

  14. Should we trade ariza now so that we can allow both quincy and aminu develop?? This is likely going to be a behind the scenes issue in our front office because both q pon and aminu are sophomores with gobs of potential and quiny showed a lot of improvement according to monty, but ariza is a huge part of our defense which was our bread and butter last season. Also, do we trade mek or kaman or neither?? Trading mek would relieve us of some salary but we would probably get as better offer foye kaman due to his expiring contract. We’ll just have to wait and see. This should be interesting. Hopefully we get an owner soon so dell can do his thing without the league crampin’ his style

  15. So glad the Houston/LA trade didn’t go through! Does everybody remember how depressed we were when we first heard about the Lakers trade? It was all a bad dream! Actually, I was starting to get used to the idea of Paul staying for one final swan song season, and the Hornets hopefully picking up guys to help him have a competitive season.
Good luck, Chris! You have been a LOVED player! Sorry about Bower f#@king everything up for you. We understand why you want to move on.

Who knows? Maybe Chris will want to resign with us when he’s a free agent!

  16. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS TRADE!! buuut..It makes me feel bad that Belli won’t be able to start cause of Gordon after he just signed back with us..

    • I think this is perfect for Bellinelli. He can come off the bench and launch some 3’s and can maybe play SG and have Gordon bring the ball up in some situations. This is the role he’s mosted suited to IMO.

  17. Wow. I never thought I’d be elated at Chris Paul leaving. He’s the reason after all why I became a Hornets fan. Gonna miss you Chris wearing the Hornets color but you go on, I’ll stay with the New Orleans Hornets and their amazing fans.

  18. I just can’t be happy about never seeing CP3 in a hornets jersey again. God he was fun to watch. It’ll still be fun to see him play with Griffin, but not the same. At least we weren’t left with nothing, but this is a sad, sad day IMHO. Good Luck CP3. I sure wish you would have stayed in NOLA.

    • I agree, i really love CP and im gonna miss him. Sucks to see him go. But we got the best deal we could get, at least

  19. At least if we sign Kirs Humphries theres no dreadful Kim Kardashian to be seeing on sidelines at Hornets games despite that marriage was fake anyway

  20. I heard that Drew Brees is going to pick Eric Gordon from the airport.Lets hope Gordon didn’t hear Jared Allen demeaning remarks about New Orleans on our local newscast

    • I asked about this and got a no comment, basically.

The logistics will be challenging given time difference and team departing at 3 for the game, and the business side of the trade… I’m sure Drew could get out of practice, but is the Saints game prep first?

    • This sounds like speculation. How about spelling out some reasons.

For instance, what about Jack, who plays best when get gets over the 25min mark (Each min after 25 is likely better than any of the minutes before that mark)? Why would Gordon beat out Jack for the starting PG spot when we are thinner there. And what would we offer Afflalo that Denver wouldn’t meet?
