Game On: Thunder @ Pelicans

The red hot Pelicans take on the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight in the finale of a six game home stand which has given a boost of confidence to fans and players alike, and perhaps some breathing room to Monty Williams. A win tonight would leave your Pelicans just half a game back of the Phoenix Suns for the eighth and final seed in the Western Conference. A loss and they’ll be just a single game ahead of the Thunder and on their way back on the road.

Pelicans fans will be happy to hear that Kevin Durant is out yet again with a toe injury to his left foot. The Thunder are 14-8 when Durant plays, but a mere 10-16 when he rides the pine.

News and notes

  • New Orleans is 2-0 so far this year against OKC and will play them again on Friday. If the Pelicans can manage two victories they will become the first Western Conference team in four years to sweep the season series against the Thunder.
  • Even if the Pelicans win just one of the final two games in the season series, it would give them what could wind up being a very important playoff tie-breaker.
  • The Pelicans signed Toney Douglas to a 10-day contract earlier today to provide depth to the point guard position. The Pelicans will be the fifth team Douglas has played for over the past five seasons. Expect his role to be similar to that of Nate Wolters, who was not re-signed following the expiration of his second 10-day contract.
  • If the NBA eliminated conferences this is how the playoff pictures would look–

Looks pretty great, eh? Maybe we just aren’t allowed to have that much fun…

Enjoy the game!
