Last night the New Orleans Pelicans traded point guard Tim Frazier to the Washington Wizards in return for the 52nd pick in tonight’s NBA Draft.

The move clears around $2 million in cap space, and in conjunction with the NBA salary cap expected to be around $99 million (revised down from the projection of $101 million) could signal the Pelicans value cap room and flexibility above all else. If the team renounces Holiday’s cap hold, and manages to clear their books of some other contracts, there is potential for around $27 million in cap space to chase after a top tier free agent to pair with Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins.

Now with two picks in the second round (40 and 52) the Pelicans are in position to take two players on minimum contracts, or package the picks to move up slightly and draft a guy they really like–as they did last season with Cheick Diallo. We will find out tonight during the draft.
