One of the really great things about the world of professional sports is its ability to inspire and deliver philanthropic activity on many levels. That philanthropy can come directly from sports teams and/or players, but it can also manifest itself through the assistance of a third party. A strong local example is the Touchdown Club, a non-profit organization connected with the New Orleans Saints.

At Bourbon Street Shots, we like to take any opportunity that we can to promote this kind of charitable activity. Typically, that comes in the form of covering events hosted or sponsored by the Pelicans themselves, but we are also starting to see more non-profit groups pop up elsewhere. About a year ago, a similar organization to the Touchdown Club was founded for the New Orleans Pelicans called the Three Point Club. I asked their President, Dr. Lance Turkish, to explain a little bit about who they are and what they do:
The 3 Point Club of New Orleans is a community service organization supporting the New Orleans Pelicans, the sport of basketball, and the Greater New Orleans community. The organization was formed approximately one year ago by a group of Pelicans fans with extensive experience in community service. Recognizing the importance of the New Orleans Pelicans to the community, they decided to create an organization to encourage fan support for the New Orleans Pelicans and promote philanthropic activity related to basketball. The 3 Point Club of New Orleans is a tax exempt social and recreational club IRC 501 (c)(7) so the donations to the organization are NOT tax-deductible.
The 3 Point Club will have its first major fundraising event this week in the form of a dinner with Pelicans Head Coach Alvin Gentry. The dinner will take place on Thursday, September 24 from 6:30-9:30 PM at Chateau Country Club in Kenner. If you are interested in joining the club, a membership application can be found here. Disclosure: My father, Harley Ginsberg, donates his time to this organization, serving on its board of directors. No one on the 3 Point Club’s Executive Committee or Board of Directors receive any kind of financial compensation for the work that they do for the organization.
