Pelicans @ Hawks Open Thread

Welcome to your Game Day Open Thread! Unfortunately tonight’s game in Atlanta is not televised but you can listen to it on the radio and follow along on twitter for updates.

The most important piece of news is probably that Darius Miller is getting his second preseason start at small forward. And that’s about it since, well, it’ll be tough to analyze the game as it goes on. So! Open thread time! What do you want to talk about? Give us your thoughts on the game, or on anything Pelicans related. Some ideas:

Do you think Darius Miller could be a good fifth option as a starter?

Who is your breakout Pelican of the year?

Do you think Eric Gordon opts out of his contract at the end of the season if he has a good year?

Even if it’s not televised, oh wow is it good to have the NBA season upon us!

  1. I’ll go first!
I think Miller would be a great 5th option. He has shown pretty good passing ability in his two years with the team, and if his time at Kentucky is anything to go by, he is very unselfish. He’s the type of player who could have a lot of hockey assists for the team. Simply having a guy who doesnt stall the offense would be enough when paired with Evans, Davis, Anderson, etc. And if he can consistently hit a few threes that’d be cool too. He also did an okay job guarding Durant.
So the breakout player could be him, but it could also be Rivers. He’s shown the skillset, now he just needs to do everything consistently, and a little better. It’s very possible.
And is it just me (and Mac) thinking Gordon looks/sounds like a guy in a contract year? He’s in the best shape of his tenure here and his attitude seems entirely different. If he has a good season I could see him opting out.

  2. Who do you think is a truly viable trade partner with the Pelicans for Eric Gordon? What would an offer of Gordon and Anderson get in return? I would love us to have a starting caliber small forward who could make a jumpshot attack the rim and play defense. Wilson Chandler and Nicholas Batum come to mind. I would even love Jeff Green we could get some picks in return. I’m done with Eric Gordon. Tyreke wants to be here I don’t like guessing with EG he hasn’t been worth it at all. Let me know what yall think. I wouldn’t want to get rid of Anderson unless the price is right Im just wondering what could be a return if we added him into that kind of trade.

  3. curtiseking90 Honestly, I dont think Gordon is tradable right now. Demps has tried. He’s reached out to other teams and no one wanted him. I think the best thing is to hope he opts out.
Anderson, especially on that contract, could help fetch a better return. But I think he needs to prove he is healthy before any teams really become interested.

  4. If Gordon plays like it’s a contract year and he’s looking for the next one that’ll be great. If Gordon just contributes a solid amount this is a full on playoff team. Good thing is he won’t have to see a great amount of time that could lead to injury due to our depth at guard. But forget Gordon, I’m ready to see Asik in action this year. Let’s go Pels

  5. So assuming injury is what has kept Gordon from playing at a higher level since arriving in New Orleans and he is now healthy, could we speak on what type of numbers Pelicans fans are looking to see before concluding that Gordon has “lived up to” max deal?

  6. Steven J Getting any consistent production out of him will be a huge bonus. Pelicans have some decent depth this year and he is a big reason why.

  7. peytontaylor Even when healthy he has had a tendency to disappear during games. But if he’s healthy for the full year I think a line of 18 pts, 3 assists and 1.5 3-pointers made is reasonable.  dont think you’d say it’s worth his contract, but very little would be.

  8. Jake Madison peytontaylor so you’re saying that for the 2014-15 season, there is nothing Gordon can do to make Pels fans happy? Joe Johnson (21 mil per year) averaged 15.8 ppg, 2.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds on a playoff team last year yet you contend that Gordon averaging 18 points and 3 assists is not satisfactory? What about 20 points and 4 assists? My point is that Pels fans appear so turned off by Gordon that now “very little would be [enough] to justify his yearly salary.

  9. peytontaylor Jake Madison I would be happy with that, but I dont think it would equate to him living up to the contract.

  10. Jake Madison peytontaylor would you say it’s fair to say that Derrick Rose hasn’t lived up to his contract because he’s missed almost two years?

  11. peytontaylor Jake Madison Without having a look at their salary cap situation, which factors into something like this, I couldnt tell you for sure. But yeah I could agree with that.

  12. Jake Madison peytontaylor my point is that gordon is healty now and that there are reports that Gordon looks similar to his LAC days. why not give the kid a chance to play instead of constantly focusing on bashing him and figuring out how to trade him.

    John Reid

    Monty
Williams on Eric Gordon: ”He looks like Eric now. I think the time off
really allowed him to heal. He’s really been good in camp.”
    Nakia Hogan
Eric Gordon with a strong move to the basket for layup. Looked a lot like LAC Eric Gordon.

  13. peytontaylor That doesn’t erase the past few season, of which most of the criticism is deserved. I’m fine rooting for the guy, but I need to see it for an extended period of time. Which we have not yet. I dont think that’s unreasonable.

  14. Not listening but kind of following the box score a little..rough half. Any players standing out particularly?
