Pelicans’ Monty Williams to Join Team USA Coaching Staff

Per the AP:

A person with knowledge of the details says Tom Thibodeau and Monty Williams will join the returning Jim Boeheim as assistant coaches for the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.

Thibodeau and Williams will work the next three years under coach Mike Krzyzewski. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the hirings were to be announced later Monday.

Given Nate McMillan’s departure from the staff, Monty’s presence could be partially due to a solid recommendation by his mentor.

This is yet another feather in the cap of Monty Williams, Tom Benson, the New Orleans Pelicans, and New Orleans.

Rubbing elbows with fellow 2010 free agent coach Tom Thibodeau and Coach K can’t be a bad thing either.

Finally, these duties increase the chances of the Pelicans adding an assistant to Monty’s staff, which should help in a few different ways.

  1. Excellent in more ways than one. Monty gets a diverse coaching experience in addition to peerage with high-caliber coaches. And of course, as mentioned, this reflects very well on the Pelicans organization.
    It’s the little things.

  2. With the revolving door of coaches he had a better chance of getting that job than that guy who claims he’s the coach of the Heat.

  3. Good now Monty can be there to stop people from persuading Davis to join another team haha. Maybe Monty is secretly doing this to get CP3 to come back ^_^ jp btw lol

  4. Great time to be a Pelicans’ fan, but the bandwagon will be full by All Star break. The real fans are already here ready to show out when the Pelicans surprise the NBA this year.

  5. BTW…..
When are first draft workouts for Pelicans?
Will you guys have video of workouts up on the site?
    Thanks.

  6. After years of disappointment and being overlooked, things are finally looking good! Monty, Dell, and Tom mean business!

  7. This is great for Monty and the Pelicans. I think he will be a great ambassador for the organization and NOLA. Besides he will get the opportunity to observe the techniques and incorporate the best of Coach K and Tibbs into his coaching style. The remarks of Coach K regarding Monty speaks volumes of his character in the basketball community and his exposure to the players cannot be anything but a draw for the Pels.

  8. Really proud of our coach and how he is viewed throughout the league. Two players and a coach from NOLA? Crescent City Stand Up!
