In the NO Podcast Episode 115: Yeah, that’s right, a Pelican!

Michael and I talk about the last three games, I rant about the “Prevent Offense”. we answer a question about goals for this team going forward, and then talk about the upcoming games. We touch on signing Dwight Howard or Paul Millsap, some more line-up information, and, of course, we talk Pelicans and their angry eyes. Ca-caw?

What noise does a Pelican make?

  1. Love the name , dislike the logo ( except that crescent city basketball and nola one) my dislike is because of the over stylized pelican which the 3d graphic version certainly doesn’t help , but I think the national reception is subconsciously because their is no pouch , how can you have a pelican logo with no pouch , what the hell is this their saying a cheap version of the ravens logo ?

why did we go back to the sign in comment system and not the just put yer name and email one , i like that one . And will the podcast ever be available for mp3 download independent from iTunes , id love to listen it on the road but I don’t have an Iphone

    look forward to listening

  2. As of Sunday evening, the Wiz have a better chance of making the playoffs than the Bees (which is really an indication of how soft the East is).

Last year the team played hard every game. Why don’t they play as hard this year?

Winning not a priority? What Div-1 or pro football team would ever have that attitude? Maybe that’s why football is so much more popular.

All names are not local. In a previous post, I enumerated a large list of “generic” mascots. (How does “Hornets” represent Charlotte NC?)

High-brow? Criminy! When did basketball become high-brow? Who’s high brow when alternately drinking Bud Light and screaming at the referees? When did Louisiana become high brow?

Criteria for a good name? (1) one or more of tough/fierce/predatory/strong/brave/etc (2) one or two syllable name, which enhances chantability.

    • The Hornets thing comes from Cornwallis calling Charlotte a hornets nest of rebellion.

Knickerbockers is a counter example to your criteria.

      • Charlotte a hornets nest of rebellion

        Thanks.

IMNSHO it’s still a serviceably generic “good” name.

Knickerbockers is a counter example to your criteria.

They are criteria for a good name. (Unless you’re Div III and/or actually a high brow College/University, in which case you’re allowed to have a weird/amusing/sarcastic name. Go Banana Slugs!!)

Knickerbockers is not a good name.

BTW, third criterion: no pandering to commercialism (Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Orlando Magic) or fads or both (Toronto Raptors two years after the Jurassic Park movie.)

      • I don’t like Knickerbockers, but millions do. Think the Knicks would change their name to… what? If they won’t change it then it might just be a good name. Being such a valuable franchise supports this.

      • If they won’t change it then it might just be a good name.

        Or it’s tradition/inertia.

Being such a valuable franchise supports this.

A NY/NJ team would be valuable even if named the East River Flounders, just by virtue of it being in/around NYC.

      • Tradition . . . that’s not a factor in a good name. Feel free to define “good” to mean “something I like,” but that’s not a definition that’s going to explain reality very well.

About NY teams . . . explain the Dodgers.

      • Tradition . . . that’s not a factor in a good name.

You are correct that it’s not a INSMO good basis for a name.

But then, lots of people do *lots* of things without having a “good” and rational reason for doing them.

I hope that clarifies my thinking.

Feel free to define “good” to mean “something I like,”

I try to separate my rational thoughts from emotions (for ex., I dislike eating liver even though I know it’s good for me.

Thus, I attempted to enumerated rational criteria for what makes a good name, instead of arbitrarily stating, “I like foo but hate bar.”

About NY teams . . . explain the Dodgers.

        Don’t comprehend what you want.

    • Hornets was named for charlotte being known as a hornets’ nest. Its their name. And I’m fine with it going back. I’m pumped for the pelicans, and it seems like most of NOLA has my back. #NamesDontWinTitles #GoPels!

  3. I love the new name. Pelicans. It will get sometime for everyone to get used to it but in the end I am sure everyone will be happy with it. Just a suggestion to the entire hornets247.com crew: Do not forget to register your future domain name (www.pelicans247.com) right away! 🙂
