NBA Advanced Statistics Abbreviations Glossary


Refer to this glossary for light descriptions of various NBA advanced statistical metrics.

ORtg – Offensive Rating; total points scored per 100 possessions (2011-12 league average: 101.8)

DRtg – Defensive Rating; total points allowed per 100 possessions (2011-12 league average: 101.8)

NetRtg – Net Rating; offensive rating minus defensive rating (2011-12 league average: 0.0)

eFG% – Effective FG%; field goal percentage weighted for added value of a 3-point shot (2011-12 league average: 48.7%)

OeFG% – Opponents’ Effective FG%; opponents’ field goal percentage weighted for added value of a 3-point shot (2011-12 league average: 48.7%)

TS% – True Shooting %; field goal percentage adjusted for both 3-pointers & free throws (2011-12 league average: 52.7%)

FTR – Free throw Rate; total free throw attempts divided by total field goal attempts (2011-12 league average: 27.6%)

ORR – Offensive Rebound Rate; offensive rebounds collected divided by total number of available rebounds (2011-12 league average – for teams: 26.9%, for players: 5.6%)

DRR – Defensive Rebound Rate; defensive rebounds collected divided by total number of available rebounds (2011-12 league average – for teams: 73.0%, for players: 14.5%)

TRR – Total Rebound Rate; total rebounds collected divided by total number of available rebounds (2011-12 league average – for teams: 50.0%, for players: 10.0%)

AR: Assist Rate; total assists divided by total possessions (2011-12 league average: 19.8%)

%Ast: Percent of field goals assisted; total assisted field goals made divided by total field goals made (2011-12 league average: 57.5%)

TOR: Turnover Rate; total turnovers divided by total possessions (2011-12 league average – for teams: 13.8%, for players: 14.6%)

OTOR: Opponents’ Turnover Rate; total opponent turnovers divided by total opponent possessions (2011-12 league average: 13.8%)

WS: Win Shares; amount of wins out of a team’s total for which a player was accountable (calculation method described here)

PER: Player Efficiency Rating; an all-encompassing rating of a player’s per-minute productivity (more detailed explanation here)
