New Orleans Hornets by the Numbers: New Toys From the NBA

The NBA hooked us up with a new stat tool, so I’m taking it for a test drive.

Here’s a nice quote about Griffin by Monty, too– “He’s no fool — he knows he’s making people look crazy and guys don’t like that. He’s gotta expect some of that. It’s just gonna happen. If you jump 5 feet over somebody and dunk it and you got people coming up to you and hugging you after you do it, the opponent’s not gonna say, ‘Oh, man, can you do that again?’

Zero players on the Hornets are averaging over 20 points per 36 minutes.

One active Hornet (Farouq) is averaging less than 10 pts/36mins

The Hornets most popular two man lineups aren’t doing too hot.

Three of the four most played five-man lineups have done well, but the exception has been terrible.

Speaking of five, there has yet to be a five-win month, but they have three chances to make it happen in March (@Warriors, @Lakers and @Blazers)

Six points total is how many the Hornets have been outscored by in the seven minutes that have taken place with less than 30 seconds to go in the game while being within 3 points of their opposition

Eight games won since the All-Star break.

In the Hornets nine wins with Jarrett Jack active, he’s done less for the team than he has in their 33 losses. His usage rate and percentage of field goals attempted are both down in wins and up in losses. He also shoots better from the field in losses, while accumulating slightly more assists and a slightly better assist/TO ratio. Overall though, he appears to have the ball in his hands a bit less in wins than in losses.

Ten is the number I rate the Hornets win over the Clippers on a scale of one to ten.

The Hornets have lost 11 of the 14 games in which they’ve been within 3 points either way of their opposition with less than 10 seconds left

Gustavo Ayon wears number 15, but maybe he should be number one. He’s a member of the Hornets most successful…

…two-man lineup (Gustavo and Vasquez combined to play 296 minutes while out-scoring their opponents by 52)

…three-man lineup (Gustavo, Vasquez and Henry have played 103 minutes, outscoring their opponents by 58)

…four-man lineup (Gustavo, Vasquez, Henry, and Farouq have played 72 minutes together and have outscored their opposition by 42)

and five-man lineup (Aminu, Gustavo, Squeaky, Summers, and Greivis are +18 in 9 minutes).

The Hornets have lost 17 of the 26 games in which they’ve been within five points of their opposition with less than 3 minutes to play.

They’ve lost 19 of the 21 games in which they’ve trailed trailed by less than five or been tied with 3 minutes or less to go. In 2008-2009 the Hornets won 15 of their 29 games in which they found themselves in that situation.

Blackjack!
