Hornets close in on Carl Landry

Tonight, Carl Landry was held out of Sacramento’s game against Miami due to significant trade talks involving him. Multiple sites are now reporting that it is the Hornets that are close to acquiring him in return for David Andersen and Marcus Thornton.

I’m a fan of Landry – and though he’s been down a bit this year in Sacramento, even if he continues that production, he’d be the most productive bench player the Hornets have. If he returns to what he was the previous three years of his career, he’ll be possibly the most productive bench player the Hornets have ever had.

Of course, it would mean goodbye to Thornton. I love Buckets. This makes things really tough.

Discuss amongst yourselves, I’m a little verklempt.

  1. Am I the only one to be excited about this trade ? People on twitter are depressed about that move, sayin Landry ain’t a good D-rebounder. I remember his days in Houston bein a really good worker. A blue collar…

No doubt for me that he’s an update over Marcus latest role. We had too many 2 players, still i’m sad Marcus is the one who have to leave.

I wish him the best luck in Anaheim…hum I mean Sacramento.

  2. I’m predicting numerous negative comments. However, I like what Landry can bring to this team. I’m quite sad about MT5’s departure though.

  3. mayn….i like thornton. imo it sucks but im going to miss him most on nba 2k. he scores me double digits in nba 2k all the time!

  4. I loved Thornton too… but with a crowded back court already this was the right move. Carl Landry will help us out a ton. Not a great trade because we gave up Thornton, but a good and necessary trade we needed to make if we wanted to be even relevant in the playoffs.

  5. I feel we could get a better deal if we’re shipping out Buckets for someone, so we should at least wait until Thursday to actually make this deal until something comes up. Then again I’m not a GM…

  6. If Landry can return to Houston form which I’m expecting since Sacto sucks and he’ll be in a familiar role, then this trade is fantastic. If he’s putting up Sacto numbers, then it’s still a good trade but not a steal or anything.

I lovedddd Marcus but it just wasn’t going to happen. Marco better step it up though or I’ll be calling for his head.

  7. we lose our last quality trading chip with this trade though by dealing away marcus.. i feel like we should get a another good body like darnell jackson in this trade a good banger in the center

After this trade we have a bunch of expiring contracts and our draft pics (not our #1) and we know how many teams don’t REALLY need expirings anymore

  8. “If Carl Landry knows where he’s going, he’s not saying. But he was in a pretty good mood” – Windhorst’s Twitter

Well, sounds like Landry is pretty happy to be a Hornet. I don’t think he was ever too excited about being a King. That team sucks.

  9. It all depends on our internal knowledge as to whether MT5 would re-sign here next year and for how much. If we know he’s bolting for sure or wants too much $$ its a good move.

  10. Just trade away ALL of our draft picks in the past 4 years or so for a guy we’re going to keep for a year, MAYBE two. Great.

Landry is a good player but his game is awfully similar to West’s. I guess two David Wests are better than a West and an Andersen. Of course we have to trade away someone like Marcus. Maybe this team just never wants to have a potential 20-pt SG. No, that would be too exciting.

Ladies and Gentlemen, you are now looking at the Slowest, Most Boring Team in Basketball. Feel free to “Rate Down” this comment.

    • Cudnt have described us any better. Most boring team in Basketball. We cud have gotten a player like Brandon Wright and kept Marcus and been good. Now we have two weak ass 2 guards and the New Orleans Hornets shooting guard slot is vacant.. again. We gonna average 60ppg now

    • Actually, Landry’s game is nothing like Wests. Landry takes almost all of his shots in the post – where he finishes them at one of the best rates in the league – while drawing free throws.

    • Correction: I should have said
“Trade away all of our good/solid picks” because the rest of them have been total busts, thanks to Bower and Scott.

      Another correction:
Landry is expiring, so we are giving away a guy with assloads of potential for a guy that we’ll have FOR HALF A DAMN SEASON.

Ryan, if you’re right you’re right. That’s definitely a huge need for us, but another undersized big man???

  11. Monty mishandled MT5 from the get-go (1 of his very few mistakes this season. The saga is over. Now we can at least enjoy Hornets (and Kings) basketball again.

    • it’s possible I guess but not likely unless Denver really wants to move JR Smith. I’m sure we’ll try to get him but we don’t have much to offer.

  12. Fxck this trade. Landry aint that good and we cud have gotten another quality backup big for Buckets. Im pissed because we trade a homtown kid wit TONS of potential and Monty refused to play him. At the end of the day this trade leaves us with Willie Green starting at 2 backed up by Marco Bellinelli. Think about that. Two players who spent their careers coming off the bench or nothing more than role players. At the end of the day we get Landry who is definetly nuthin special and hasnt done anything in 3 years since Houston and cud be anyother player. Result we are left with even less of an offense and dry at the SG position. There goes the second of our top 2 draft picks in the last 6 years. Pissed

    • Dude none of your trades were going to happen. Thornton’s value isn’t as high as we think it is, just like DC’s wasn’t.

BTW, go check our 07-08 SG’s. Willie + Marco > Mo Pete, Sual, Bonzi.

      • None of my trades were gonna happen? I never thought any GM was gonna go on Hornets 24 7 and check my trade proposals. DC wud have been great to have in this team but we are left with Jarret Jack. Answer me this, we traded Marcus and DC, wat do we have left to build around in a situation CP leaves. We got a bunch of expiring contracts and aging players. When CP3 leaves to go to NY (considering NY has cap room which they will probly find a way to make room for Paul) we have a lineup of Jack / Green or Marco / Ariza / West / Okafor. One of the WORST lineups in the league. DC & Thornton wud have gave us insurance when/if chris leaves. Fan favorites who cud sell tickets and with potential and cud win games. Now we have a shit team left if West & Paul leave.
Btw, I wud when did i ever mention ’08 SG were better than now? Id take a young talented MT over Marco or Wille

  13. yeah would be nice to resign thornton at the end of the year. now its time to send off beli or green for jr smith!

  14. Well I was thinking with MT5 it should be either play him or trade him. If he wasn’t gonna get good minutes, which seems to be the case, then so long and thanks for the memories and we look forward to you dropping 25+ on us. In a way I hope you because he probably would personally wanna stick it to Monty’s team/anyone who he felt undeservingly got minutes ahead of him.

I would hope we could get a little more though than just Landry….

  15. We need a back up big for the playoffs, and Carl has shown he can play (when he was in Houston). I HOPE this isn’t the only trade Dell can make, we still need another scorer, maybe JR is still a possibility. I guess we’ll see what happens, when all these rumors come to an end.

  16. Guys, Landry is a very good player that can play 3-5. Check out what he was able to do with Houston, a winning team, and Sacramento last year.

  17. It is odd that we have our 3 crappiest SG’s left and our 1 best one (and crowd favorite, ticket selling, seat filler) is gone.

  18. i know everyone keeps saying with thornton you got to trade him or play him. isnt this the same thing for landry? landry will get 10-15 mins behind west. he seems too small to be a 5.

    • Never thought of this, very good point.

A point of lesser value, is Landry to be called insurance in case West does not return next year?

    • not trying to be rude but have you seen him play? he is blue collar, bangs wit the big boys. he can play the 5 in any small lineup and in the 15 minutes emeka wont play he is definetly adequate to play any backup 5 in the league

  19. So Demps’ strategy is to trade young, cheap players (Collison/Thornton) for guys who USED to be good (Ariza/Landry) or who’ve YET to be good (Belinelli/Green/Smith), while dumping players the previous regime overpaid for (Posey/Peja).

This team still rides on CP/West and little else. I’m not impressed. I’ll give Demps a few days to cement his first year, but if nothing else happens, I’ll be sorely disappointed.

    • We soley rely on CP3 & West. HE traded Collison & Marcus who cud be key to the future of this franchise. The players he is trading for are mediocre at best nothing special at all. Jus as disappointed

    • m-W: To answer your off-line question . . . Marcus is a restricted free agent next year, so there is value in `having him.’

    • I don’t think you give dell enough credit for clearing so many horrible contracts off the docket, giving us flexibility to go in different directions the next couple years.

That being said, I am very sad to see Marcus go. i’m sorely disappointed he was not in the team’s future plans.

Landry better bust a lot of heads the next three months.

  20. Oh yeah, and now Monty can say “Marcus will playing for his FIFTH COACH in the past Year and a Half.”

    No further comment.

  21. Get over it if you don’t like the trade… It’s happening. Marcus’ trade value in our eyes was alot more than other teams because we know what he was capable of doing. But if we want to win NOW and keep CP3 then we need to make the right moves for it by getting someone strong in our front court. I hope Demps pulls a deal for another quality 2 Guard but for now we need to work with what we have..

  22. Has Sincerely Yours said anything correct in this entire thread?

Your assessment of Thornton is too generous, and of Landry, too harsh.

Why are you so concerned about our roster, post-Paul? Do you really think the team should be planning for that right now, rather than trying to win games and make a little noise in April?

If you don’t like the slow, boring team, don’t watch them anymore.

  23. Monty never give Marcus a chance. I feel sorry for the fans in New Orleans. He can really get the crowd going when he’s on fire. I guess this move is a sign we’re going to lose DWest.
