Demps had this to say about the hiring:

“I am excited to announce Danny Ferry has accepted our offer to join the New Orleans Pelicans basketball operations staff as a special advisor. Danny’s experience, insight and achievements will be a welcomed addition to the Pelicans as we continue our quest to improve the team.”

Demps and Ferry go way back, as they have known each other for years. They both have ties to the San Antonio Spurs. Ferry worked there from 2003 through 2005, then again from 2010-2012, while Demps would come in from 2005 through 2010, when the then-New Orleans Hornets hired him as GM. Ferry spent 2005-2010 as the Cleveland Cavaliers GM and most recently worked as the GM of the Atlanta Hawks from 2012 through 2015. His 2014-15 Hawks won 60 games and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals before ultimately losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

According to Scott Kushner of the Advocate Ferry won’t be brought in full time, but will work out of Atlanta for the Pels:

Regardless of his role with the organization, bringing in someone as experienced and successful as Ferry in any measure to assist Dell is a smart move. He had an amazing string of successful moves in Atlanta: dumping Joe Johnson, bringing in Paul Milsap, Kyle Korver, DeMarre Carroll, and Kent Bazemore just to name a few. Hopefully he can help the Pels find the next surprise young piece. More in-depth analysis of the hiring to come.
