Per the Pelicans:

The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that Darius Miller suffered a stress fracture in his left foot. Team doctors discovered the injury after Miller experienced discomfort recently. Dr. Richard Ferkel of Southern California Orthopedic Institute surgically repaired the stress fracture. Miller will return to New Orleans on September 10, 2013 to begin the rehabilitation process. He is expected to miss 8-12 weeks.

This time table forces Miller to miss the physical trials of training camp, preseason, and the start of the regular season. He should be able to participate in the installation of the system, however, if rehabilitation allows. Stress fracture rehabilitation involves reducing the activity that caused the stress fracture initially and related intense activities. Thus, his intense physical activity will likely be confined to the regimented rehabilitation program.

Miller’s absence from on-court activity should further raise the likelihood that Morrow and Evans see minutes when Aminu is not on the floor.

Miller racked nearly 700 minutes in the franchise’s final season as the New Orleans Hornets, playing about 13 minutes per game across 52 games with 2 starts. His TS% is only slightly higher than Aminu’s, but Miller is a more effective deep threat with a 3P% of 39.3%. This was good for second on last season’s team, but he only shot the long ball about once per game and rarely gets to the line. He provided a change of pace from Aminu, but his advanced summary statistics painted him a poor player by NBA standards. This offseason could have been instrumental in his development, but he may see more D-League time at some point if he’s not getting minutes with the Pelicans.

Miller is on the second year of his 2-year minimum deal. He’ll be a restricted free agent at the start of the 2013-2014 season if he remains with the Pelicans through the season.
