The Hornets extended a 5.1 million dollar qualifying offer to free agent Eric Gordon today, making him restricted.

The deal allows them to match any offer for the guard in free agency. New Orleans has been particularly loud about their desire to keep him. The Hornets were unable to come to terms on an extension last season when they reportedly offered somewhere around 12 million per year over four years. He’s widely expected to be seeking a near-max deal this summer.  According to our Hornets CBA FAQ, there are three he could potentially sign:

  • 4 Years, 55.2 million dollars from another team [12.922, 13.504, 14.085, 14.667]
  • 4 Years, 57.5 million dollars from us  [12.922, 13.891, 14.861, 15.830]
  • 5 Years, 74.3 million dollars from us [5th year = 16.8]

Gordon averaged a team-leading 20.6 points in addition to 3.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals in nine games (all starts) while shooting 45.0% from the field. The Hornets were 6-3 when Gordon played this season and he led the team in scoring in all but one of those contests.

He’s expected to draw interest from Cleveland and Indiana, where he is from.
